ADOX Sport

Sport was the name of a range of 6x9 Adox folders, manufactured in Wiesbaden in the old Wirgin factory in several versions, also with rangefinder. The Wirgin-branded model was named Presto.

It was named Sport, I think, in part because it was a catchy name, but also because it was simple, sturdy, and easy to "pack and go". It was offered in various degrees of refinement from before WWII until the end of the 50's. It was usually fitted with a Steinheil Cassar or Schneider-Kreuznach Radionar lenses.

The Sport Ia is differentiated from the Sport I by the small 'a'... and by a completely redesigned top cover, integrating the finder with an accessory shoe. The I usually was fitted with a Vario shutter, the Ia has a Pronto shutter, the II a Prontor S, and the III a Prontor SV (according to McKeown).

As can be seen on the camera’s back, it is multi-format. It can shoot 6x9 or 6x45 thanks to a moveable internal mask: The Sport came with a 6x4.5 mask, but like others, these are usually lost. Structurally, this is among the strongest folders, rock solid, that you could choose.

It was imported into the US by Saul Bower as the Bower, the Bower-X with red leatherette coverings and red bellows is a pretty nice camera, very eye-catching with only one caveat: they were modified to use 620 film instead of 120, although they can be readapted.
