Zeiss-Ikon Super Ikonta B

Super Ikonta was the name of a series of folding bellows medium format cameras made since 1934, when two different models were marketed, one for 6x4.5 and another for 6x9. Following Zeiss catalogue serial numbering, these models were the 530 and the 530/2 respectively. Sometimes the first one is referred to as the Super Ikonta A, and the second as the Super Ikonta C. A short while after the introduction of these models in the market, a thirs model was added to the series: the 530/16 for 6x6 also known as Super Ikonta B. There was even a 530/15 model for film type 616, known as Super Ikonta D.

In 1937, Zeiss changed the coding of their Super Ikonta. The 530 was then renamed as 531 for the "A" and "C" models, and 532 for the "B" model. Model "D" was dropped by 1936.

The Zeiss Super Ikonta B is a medium format folding camera that takes 11 6x6 pictures on 120 film. It was made between late 30s and late 50s, with some variations during this production run. They were fitted with a 80/2.8 Tessar, and the most sought-after variation is the post-WW2 on Synchro-Compur shutter, since lenses were multicoated. The "Super" on the name references to the fact that they are Ikontas with an added rangefinder, and early units were labelled "Super Ikomat".

First units made before WW2 have two separate windows for viewfinder and rangefinder. Later the rangefinder was combined and newer Super Ikontas share a single window for both features.

Pre-WW2 units can be easily recognizable because they are black enameled, while later units have it chromed. These are the most sought-after models, made only during the first years of the 1950s.

One of the main features of this camera is the automatic advance. One simply has to load the film, close the door and advance until the mechanism engages and locks. The drawback is that this system allows for 11 pictures per roll, instead of the classical 12 pictures. Since there is a red window on the rear door, one can advance manually and obtain 12 pictures per roll.

Rangefinder is coupled: by moving the focusing wheel located at the right of the lens both rangefinder and lens itself are focus at the same distance at the same time.

Weighting 1.050 grams (yeah, slightly over 1 kilo) and dimensions of 51x95x140mm this camera is really sturdy.
